The Creatures of the Night Hayride
As we have done in the past, A Time for Science is sponsoring another Haunted Hayride around Halloween. Unfortunately we are already booked FULL for all hayrides during our mult-night sessions. The event was posted online and in the newspaper and the response was amazing. So, if you have a confirmed reservation we will see you at your designated day and time. For all others, all we can say is “Sorry, and we’ll see you next year!” We will try and accommodate a larger crowd in the future.
International Observe the Moon Night
You are invited to come to the Bray Hollow Nature Conservancy to join A Time for Science and the Carolina Skies Astronomy Club to participate in International Observe the Moon Night. If you arrive early around 5:30 take an opportunity to stroll the scale model of the solar system (about 0.6 miles) and/or experience a touch of space when you examine the nose-wheel of the Space Shuttle Endeavor. After the sun goes down, gaze at the moon and stars through telescopes provided by the astronomy club.

Fall Equinox 2011
You are invited to come to the Bray Hollow Nature Conservancy to join A Time for Science and Carolina Skies Astronomy Club for the Fall Equinox 2011 – Star Party on Friday, September 23rd – starting after sundown (around 7:00 with good viewing by 9 pm) . This is a FREE event to attend. Weather and cloud cover permitting.
Update: Due to the weather, this event has been cancelled. Sorry!
Some of the highlights will include:
- Telescopes will be available for viewing
- The waning crescent moon will not rise till after midnight
- Be sure to be on hand at sunset since Saturn is the only visible planet that pops out at dusk throughout September. But sets shortly thereafter
- The summer constellations like Leo and Scorpio will be giving way to those of fall like Pegasus Perseus, and Andromeda
Come Early And…
- Walk the Solar System to Scale – Arrive by 5:45 pm and use your own “Pace” Ship, start at the 8-in diameter Sun and walk the 6/10 of a mile to Pluto, visualizing the planets along the way in exact proportional distance and size to the model Sun. (Note: Please give notice early on-line if you will be attending this activity)
- Touch, explore and examine the nose-wheel tire that went into space and back on the Space Shuttle Endeavour, Mission STS-113. This historic item is on loan from NASA and the Eastern NC Regional Science Center, Inc. (DBA GO-Science).
