Carolina Skies Astronomy Club – Dec 2012

A Scholarly Look at the Star of Bethlehem

Saturday December 8 at 6:30 pm

This event, free and open to the public, begins with an indoor presentation and will be followed (weather permitting) by star gazing with the amateur astronomers of the astronomy club

About this Program

It is traditional at this time of year for stargazers to ponder the possible origin of the Star of Bethlehem. Was the so-called Christmas “Star” an unusual, eye-catching gathering of naked-eye planets?   Was this “sign in the sky” a meteor, a comet, a nova, or was it, indeed, something supernatural?  While there is no definite answer to this age-old question, any search for an answer leads us down interesting paths not only of science, but also history, religion and philosophy.  It really is one of the most unusual detective stories of all time.  This exciting program, developed by NASA’s Night Sky Network several years ago and expanded on with information from additional researchers, examines the skies around the time of Christ’s birth to explore possible astronomical phenomena that may have given rise to the Star of Bethlehem.
