Second Annual Turtle Run A Huge Success

The first showers of April passed over us at ATFS, the clouds parted and on Saturday April 2 and spring sunshine greeted nearly 150 runners and walkers of all ages for the Second Annual Love A Sea Turtle (L.A.S.T.) 5K/10K Trail Run and Nature Walk. A variety of sponsors and volunteer workers provided all that was necessary to put on a very successful and very fun race over our uniquely prepared (and recently certified) course. Among them was Flanders Filters who sponsored the chip timing provided by Run the East.
The first three overall places for the 5K course were taken by Michael Petty (19:05), Mckinley Gray (20:02) and Stephanie Jilcott (20:54). For the 10K course the overall first places were taken by Rodney Tatum (41:13), Kay Evans (48:52) and Christopher Wooten (49:20). Congratulations to all.
Money raised by this event will go toward funding for kids from the Boys and Girls Clubs around Pitt County to attend next summer’s aquatic camps here at ATFS. During the awards ceremonies Casey Sokolovic, the young founder of L.A.S.T., was presented with the Prudential Spirit of Community Award which, together with her recent Sea World and Busch Gardens Environmental Excellence Award is providing the funds for the Boys and Girls Club members attending this year’s camps. Plans are already in the work for next year’s Third Annual Run and judging from the growth experienced between last year and this year we should be e expecting bigger and better things to come.
