Boys and Girls Club – “Growing Food for and by Growing Bodies”
“Growing Food for and by Growing Bodies” is the project title for the “Edible Landscape” (Community Garden) project initiated by A Time for Science (ATFS) at the new Boys and Girls Club of Ayden near Ayden Elementary School. Saturday saw some of the first externally visible evidence of this project. Six South Central High School students performing service hours for the senior project being conducted by Colton Roberts under the direction of ATFS Advisory Board Member Ann McClung. These students acquired the materials for and assembled the seven raised beds that will make up the first phase of the garden project. They filled the beds with top soil contributed by Harvey Lewis of E.R. Lewis Construction Co., Inc.
Over the past couple of weeks Nancy Bray, ATFS Director of Educational Programs, with the help Joni Torres and other Pitt County Master Gardeners have been developing the plans, seeking grant support and have been working with Club members to start their vermiculture (worm activated) compost bins and to begin the germination of their seeds, which were provided by Robert McCurry of McCurry’s Hardware and Garden Supply. In the tradition of ATFS, this is truly a Community project and is intended to be a continuing one.
